Colonoscopy

LivingCare has recently started providing a direct access Colonoscopy service which currently runs from Fountain Medical Centre, Morley.

The service will also start running from Northgate Medical Centre, Pontefract and Thorpe Park Clinic, Colton within the very near future.

Conditions Treated:

  • Over 40 years old with rectal bleeding with a change of bowel habit towards looser stools and/orincreased stool frequency persisting 6 weeks or more.
  • Patients at any age with altered blood or blood mixed in stool.
  • Over 60 years old with rectal bleeding persisting for 6 weeks or more without a change in bowel habit and without anal symptoms.
  • Over 60 years old with a change in bowel habit to looser stools and/or more frequent stools persisting for 6 weeks or more without rectal bleeding.
  • Men of any age with unexplained iron deficiency anaemia.
  • Non-menstruating women with unexplained iron deficiency.
  • Clinically significant diarrhoea of unexplained origin (including microscopic colitis).
  • Abnormal or suspicious findings in colon on barium enema, CT or virtual (CT) colonography,or persistent abdominal symptoms with raised CRP.

Procedures Performed:

Diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopy.

Exclusions:

  • Severe comorbidity.
  • Severe parkinsonism.
  • Suspected bowel cancer.
  • Severe weight loss.
  • Acute diarrhoea.
  • Patients unable to give informed consent and patients unable to take oral bowel preparation (which will involve drinking up to 4 litres of fluid in 24 hours).

Service Notes:

Your patient will be prescribed Moviprep prior to their procedure. It is important the patient does not have significant renal impairment. Your patient will require an escort to the appointment in case any sedation is administered. Colonoscopy is not without risk and patients should be informed that there is a 1:1000 risk of perforation, increasing to 1:500 during removal of caecal polyps.
