Background

Mr James C Halstead read Medicine at Trinity Hall, University of Cambridge and completed clinical school training at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge.  He then trained in both cardiothoracic surgery and general surgery (specialising in upper gastrointestinal tract surgery) in Oxford, Cambridge, London, New York and Leeds.  He passed the FRCS part III examination in upper gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary surgery in February 2008 and has been a Consultant Upper GI and Bariatric surgeon since October that year.

Clinical and Managerial Interests

As a consultant upper gastrointestinal surgeon with a specialist interest in minimally invasive (laparoscopic surgery)his three main areas of specialist interest are oesophagogastric cancer surgery, surgery for obesity (bariatric surgery) and surgery for functional upper GI disorders such as gastro-oesophageal reflux.  In addition to these he undertakes acute general gastrointestinal surgery, surgery for hernias, gallbladder / biliary surgery and the assessment and treatment of a wide range of gastroenterological conditions.  Much of his surgical practice is undertaken using laparoscopic or robotic (keyhole) techniques. In addition to his busy clinical practice, he has, since 2020, served as deputy operations medical director for Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
