Background
Mr James C Halstead read Medicine atTrinity Hall, University of Cambridge and completed clinical school training atAddenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge. Hethen trained in both cardiothoracic surgery and general surgery (specialisingin upper gastrointestinal tract surgery) in Oxford, Cambridge, London, New Yorkand Leeds. He passed the FRCS part IIIexamination in upper gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary surgery in February2008 and has been a Consultant Upper GI and Bariatric surgeon since Octoberthat year.
Clinical and Managerial Interests
As a consultant upper gastrointestinalsurgeon with a specialist interest in minimally invasive (laparoscopic surgery)his three main areas of specialist interest are oesophagogastric cancersurgery, surgery for obesity (bariatric surgery) and surgery for functionalupper GI disorders such as gastro-oesophageal reflux. In addition to these he undertakes acutegeneral gastrointestinal surgery, surgery for hernias, gallbladder / biliarysurgery and the assessment and treatment of a wide range of gastroenterologicalconditions. Much of his surgical practiceis undertaken using laparoscopic or robotic (keyhole) techniques. In additionto his busy clinical practice, he has, since 2020, served as deputy operationsmedical director for Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
