Advanced echocardiogram imaging to evaluate heart structure and function.

Echocardiogram

Overview

What is an Echocardiogram?

An Echocardiogram is a non-invasive imaging technique that provides data on the heart and surrounding blood vessels. It is useful for clinicians to identify any underlying cardiac conditions or diseases responsible for sudden death during sports.

How an Echocardiogram works

An Echocardiogram is an ultrasound scan. A small probe sends out high-frequency sound waves that create echoes. The probe picks up echoes and turns them into an image on a monitor. Echocardiograms can be transthoracic or transesophageal and carried out after exercise or at rest.

What to expect at an Echocardiogram

You’ll remove clothing on your upper body and lie on the bed for a transthoracic echocardiogram. Several electrodes will be attached to your chest to monitor your heart rhythm. The healthcare professional will apply lubricating gel or an ultrasound probe to your chest. You’ll lie on your left side as the consultant moves the probe across your chest. A machine will capture images of your heart.

The procedure takes 15-60 minutes.

Risks and complications from an Echocardiogram

There are no side effects or pain from this test and no radiation. If you have a transesophageal procedure, your throat may feel sore; if you have a sedative, you could feel tired. During a stress echocardiogram, you may feel dizzy. If you take certain medicines or have certain conditions, you may be unable to use the contrast agent during a contrast Echocardiogram.

How to recover from an Echocardiogram

After an Echocardiogram, you should be able to go home. If you have had a sedative, you should avoid driving for 24 hours.
