MRI Scanning

An MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scan is a non-invasive diagnostic imaging procedure that creates detailed images of the inside of the body. It’s often used to examine the brain, heart, spine, joints, urinary tract, and internal organs. MRI scans will detect, monitor, and diagnose medical conditions, creating high-resolution images without the radiation associated with X-rays. LivingCare offers MRI Scans at convenient clinics in Sheffield and Leeds.

Overview

What is an MRI scan?

An MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scan is a non-invasive diagnostic imaging procedure that creates detailed images of the inside of the body. It’s often used to examine the brain, heart, spine, joints, urinary tract, and internal organs. MRI scans will detect, monitor, and diagnose medical conditions, creating high-resolution images without the radiation associated with X-rays. LivingCare offers MRI Scans at convenient clinics in Sheffield and Leeds.

How an MRI scan works

MRI scans align protons in the body's water molecules using strong magnetic fields. These protons emit signals that are captured and processed into detailed images of internal structures. This advanced technology allows doctors to visualise soft tissues and organs with exceptional clarity.

What is an MRI Scan used for?

MRI scans provide detailed insights into various health conditions, including:

  • Diagnosing soft tissue injuries in muscles, ligaments, and tendons
  • Assessing abnormalities in the brain and spinal cord
  • Detecting joint and musculoskeletal disorders
  • Evaluating cardiovascular conditions
  • Detecting urological conditions such as prostate cancer or kidney disease
  • Monitoring the progression of specific treatments

What to expect when receiving an MRI Scan

Before the Appointment

You will complete a health questionnaire to inform the medical team of any conditions, precautions, or metallic implants (e.g., pacemakers or joint replacements). Remove all jewellery, dentures, and metallic items before the scan. Wear comfortable, metal-free clothing. Follow any specific instructions provided, such as fasting or drinking water if contrast dye is required.

During the appointment

You will lie on a movable bed that slides into the MRI scanner. The scanner is a cylindrical machine that surrounds the area examined. The radiographer operates the machine from a separate room but constantly communicates via an intercom. The scan is painless but is typically noisy; headphones or earplugs are provided for comfort. The process normally lasts 15–90 minutes, depending on the area scanned.

After the appointment

Patients can resume normal activities immediately after the scan at our Leeds or Sheffield clinics. If a sedative is used, you’ll need someone to accompany you home and avoid driving or operating machinery for 24 hours.

Risks and Complications

MRI scans are extremely safe, but there are a few considerations:

Metal Sensitivity: Individuals with metal implants or pacemakers must inform their doctor, as certain metals can interfere with the scan.

Claustrophobia: The enclosed scanner may make some patients feel anxious. Open MRI options or sedatives may reduce this feeling.

Contrast Dye Reactions: Rarely, patients may experience mild allergic reactions to the contrast dye used for some scans.

How to recover following an MRI scan

Recovery from an MRI scan is generally straightforward, with no downtime required. Patients should rest if sedated for the scan and have someone stay with them for 24 hours. Drinking plenty of water can flush out any contrast dye.
