Cancer Screening: What You Need to Know

Ultrasound imaging uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time pictures of the body's internal structures. This non-invasive, radiation-free technology is commonly used for cancer screening, as it can help identify tumors or other abnormalities in organs, muscles, and tissues throughout the body.
An ultrasound scan is a non-invasive diagnostic procedure that uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images of the body’s internal structures. This safe, radiation-free technology is widely used for cancer screening and assessing body organs, muscles, and tissues. Ultrasound is particularly effective in examining the urinary tract, identifying abnormalities in the kidneys, bladder, and surrounding structures, and diagnosing urological conditions.
At Living Care, we offer expert ultrasound scanning services at our clinics in Leeds and Sheffield, ensuring high-quality imaging for a wide range of diagnostic needs.
Ultrasound imaging uses a handheld device called a probe, which emits high-frequency sound waves. These waves bounce off internal tissues and organs, creating echoes converted into detailed images displayed on a monitor. This process allows for precise visualisation of structures such as the kidneys, bladder, and prostate gland, helping diagnose and manage, for instance, urinary tract and other health conditions.
Ultrasound is a versatile imaging tool commonly used for:
Ultrasound is a safe and effective diagnostic option for patients of all ages, offering radiation-free imaging for various conditions.
For pelvic or bladder scans, you may need to drink water beforehand to ensure a full bladder, which provides clearer images of the urinary tract. For abdominal scans, you may be asked to fast for a few hours to improve imaging accuracy. Wear loose-fitting clothing for easy access to the area being examined.
A gel will be applied to the skin to ensure smooth movement of the probe and enhance sound wave transmission. The sonographer will move the probe over the examined area to capture images. For instance, with urological scans, the probe will focus on the kidneys, bladder, or prostate gland to assess for abnormalities such as kidney stones, tumours, or blockages.
Most scans are painless and last between 15 and 45 minutes.
Once the scan is complete, the gel will be wiped off, and you can return to your daily activities immediately. Results will be reviewed by a specialist and shared with you as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.
Ultrasound scans are generally considered safe and painless, with no known risks associated with sound wave technology. However, in some cases:
