Ultrasound Scan

Ultrasound imaging uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time pictures of the body's internal structures. This non-invasive, radiation-free technology is commonly used for cancer screening, as it can help identify tumors or other abnormalities in organs, muscles, and tissues throughout the body.

How an Ultrasound Scan Works

The scan uses a probe that emits sound waves. These waves create echoes by bouncing off tissues and organs. The echos convert into images which show instantly on the monitor.

What Can an Ultrasound Scan Be Used For

Ultrasound uses sound waves to produce images of internal organs and tissues. It’s widely used for:

  • Monitoring pregnancy and fetal health.
  • Examining abdominal organs, including the liver, kidneys, and pancreas.
  • Evaluating blood flow and identifying vascular issues.
  • Investigating symptoms of pain, swelling, or infection in soft tissues.
  • Guiding certain procedures, such as needle biopsies.

Ultrasound is a safe, radiation-free option suitable for many different diagnostic needs.

What to Expect When Receiving an Ultrasound Scan

Before the Appointment

For pelvic exams, you may need a full bladder. For other areas, you might be asked to refrain from eating or drinking beforehand. Check with your healthcare provider what you need to do ahead of your appointment.

During the Appointment

Most scans last between 15-45 minutes. The sonographer will apply gel to help the probe glide for clear images.

Risks and Complications

Ultrasounds are generally considered safe and painless. You may experience:

  • Mild discomfort from an internal scan
  • Bloating or a sore throat from an endoscopic scan

How to Recover Following an Ultrasound Scan

After an ultrasound scan, you can resume your normal activities straight away. If you had a sedative, you need to rest, and you must not drive home. If possible, have someone stay with you for 24 hours.
