CT Scanning

Overview

What is a CT Scan?

A CT scan takes detailed images of the inside of your body. It helps diagnose and monitor conditions and checks how a treatment is working.

How a CT Scan Works

X-ray equipment rotates around your body to take images from different angles. A computer processes the images to provide a detailed picture of the inside of the body.

What Can a CT Scan Be Used For

CT (Computed Tomography) scans combine X-rays with computer processing to create cross-sectional images of the body. CT scans are used for:

  • Detecting internal injuries and bleeding.
  • Diagnosing cancer and monitoring treatment progress.
  • Assessing cardiovascular conditions, such as blocked blood vessels.
  • Evaluating lung, liver, and other organ diseases.
  • Planning surgeries and guiding radiation therapy.

CT scans offer detailed images and are often used when a high level of detail is necessary to make an accurate diagnosis.

What to Expect When Receiving a CT Scan

Before the Appointment

Your doctor will tell you if you need to fast, follow a special diet, or drink a contrast drink before your scan. You should also inform your doctor about any medical conditions, medications, allergies, and if you are pregnant before the appointment.

If you are claustrophobic, discuss this with your doctor. They can give you a sedative to help you relax.

Wear loose, comfortable clothing, and remove any jewellery. Avoid clothes with zippers or metal objects.

During the Appointment

You’ll lie flat on a bed while a scanner moves around you. Sometimes, the radiographer may give you a contrast medium to enhance the images. The medium can cause a temporary warm feeling or metallic taste.

You’ll need to lie very still for a clear image.

Risks and Complications of a CT Scan

Risks are rare for CT scans, but it is important to be aware of them. Risks and complications include:

  • Allergic reaction to the contrast medium
  • Repeated scans carry a small risk of radiation exposure

How to Recover Following a CT Scan

After the scan, you should be able to go home. If you had a contrast medium or a sedative, you may need monitoring for a short while. If you had a sedative, you should rest at home until the effects wear off.
