Consultant Colorectal Surgeon
Jim Tiernan is a Consultant Colorectal andGeneral Surgeon at St James’s University Hospital, Leeds. He graduated from theUniversity of Sheffield Medical School in 2004 and undertook his surgicaltraining throughout Yorkshire prior to being awarded the Gold Medal foroutstanding performance in the Royal College of Surgeons consultant examination.He followed this with a one-year fellowship in the USA in advanced colorectalsurgery at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. During his training he also undertooka PhD in nanobiotechnology, developing an intra-operative imaging system forminimally invasive colorectal cancer resection, leading to multiplepublications and prizes. He helped lead a national trial into surgicaltreatments for haemorrhoids, which was published in The Lancet and for which hewon the BJS Best Paper prize at the European Society of Coloproctology.
His sub-specialty interest is in pelvicexenteration for advanced/recurrent pelvic cancer but also treats colorectalcancer, inflammatory bowel disease and proctological conditions.
He is the Chair of the Research and AuditCommittee for the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland,and Surgical Lead for the Yorkshire and Humber NIHR Clinical Research Network. Heis also an elected member of the ACPGBI Advanced Cancer Committee, and DeputyTPD for Yorkshire & Humber Higher Surgical Training.
