An alternative treatment derived from Chinese medicine, inserting fine needles into specific areas of the body to reduce pain or encourage recovery. In the UK, we refer to Western Medical Acupuncture as the treatment following a specific medical diagnosis.
Acupuncture involves a practitioner inserting fine needles into specific points on your body. These are chosen based on your condition, and several points may be used in the same session.
The needles are expected to stimulate nerves under the skin and in muscle tissue, leading your body to produce natural substances with beneficial effects. It’s recommended as an option for some patients suffering from chronic pain, chronic tension headaches, migraines, prostatitis and hiccups.
During your appointment
Your Acupuncturist will discuss your condition, ask about your current health and medical history, and give you a physical examination before treating you.
You will either sit or lie down for treatment and will need to remove any clothes that might restrict access to acupuncture points on your body. The Acupuncturist will insert very fine needles into certain places, which are single-use and pre-sterilised.
Needles may be left in your body for a few minutes or up to 30 minutes, depending on your condition.
After your appointment
Physiotherapy shouldn’t usually be painful, but it may involve the movement of injured and strained areas of your body. The next day, you may feel muscle soreness or stiffness. Your Physiotherapist will let you know if you’re likely to have any pain and how to manage it.
Acupuncture is generally considered to be a safe treatment. There are minor side effects you may experience, such as:
