A urine flow rate test is a diagnostic procedure used to measure the speed and volume of urine flow to help identify any issues with the bladder, urethra, or prostate.
A urine flow rate test is a diagnostic procedure used to measure the speed and volume of urine flow to help identify any issues with the bladder, urethra, or prostate. It assists in detecting conditions such as urinary blockages, weak bladder muscles, or an enlarged prostate. The test is non-invasive, straightforward, and provides valuable information about the function of the lower urinary tract.
During a urine flow rate test, you will be asked to urinate into a specialised device called a flow meter. This device records the volume of urine passed and how quickly it flows. The flow meter calculates the rate at which urine flows through the urethra, helping the consultant assess whether the flow is within a normal range or if there is a restriction that could suggest an underlying issue.
Before the Appointment
To ensure accurate results, you will need to attend the appointment with a comfortably full bladder. It’s advised not to urinate just before the test and to drink enough fluids beforehand. Be sure to inform your consultant of any medications you are taking, as they may affect the results of the test.
During the Appointment
You will be asked to urinate into the flow meter in a private setting. The device will measure the amount of urine you pass, the speed at which it flows, and the time it takes to empty your bladder. It is important to try to fully empty your bladder for the most accurate results.
The test itself usually takes only a few minutes, depending on how long it takes you to urinate. Once completed, the flow meter will produce a report of your urine flow, which your consultant will review and discuss with you.
A urine flow rate test is a safe and simple procedure, but there are a few minor considerations to be aware of:
There are no serious risks or complications associated with this test, and no recovery time is needed.
There is no recovery process following a urine flow rate test as it is completely non-invasive and painless. After the test, you can return to your daily routine as normal. Your consultant will explain the results of the test, and depending on the findings, you may be referred for further investigations or treatment if necessary.
