Radiofrequency denervation is a procedure that temporarily stops a nerve from transmitting pain signals. Radiofrequency can help target specific nerves in the spine, sacroiliac joint, thigh, knee, and shoulder.
Radiofrequency denervation is a procedure that temporarily stops a nerve from transmitting pain signals. Radiofrequency can help target specific nerves in the spine, sacroiliac joint, thigh, knee, and shoulder.
The consultant uses a special X-ray and radio frequency generator machine to identify and locate the nerve. Electrical tests then allow the needle tip to get close to the nerve. The doctor injects local anaesthetic before sending a high-frequency electrical signal down the needle for 90 seconds.
We’ll learn the history of your pain and its impact on your life. We’ll consider the treatments and interventions you’ve tried and decide if Radiofrequency Treatment is an option.
Once your Radiofrequency procedure is booked, you’ll need to arrange transport to and from your appointment as you won’t be able to drive afterwards. If you’re taking medication, you will be advised by the consultant whether you should stop.
A consultant will perform your Radiofrequency Treatment. The consultant works with a nurse, radiographer and healthcare assistant to ensure you get the best care.
At your Radiofrequency appointment, the doctor will clean the skin and inject a local anaesthetic to numb the site. Using X-rays, the doctor will locate the site and check the needle is in the right place. When the needle is in place, you’ll receive radiofrequency waves.
Following the Radiofrequency Treatment, a nurse will monitor your blood pressure and check for side effects. Provided you’re well, you should be able to go home within one to three hours. You must arrange for someone to drive you home and, ideally, have someone with you at home.
Risks from Radiofrequency Treatments are rare, but it’s important to be aware of them. The risks are as follows:
If you experience heat, swelling, redness, or feel unwell, contact your GP. Patients with diabetes are at an increased risk of infection.
In rare circumstances, the treatment could lead to temporary or permanent weakness or paralysis.
If the anaesthetic causes prolonged weakness or numbness, you may need to stay in the hospital overnight for monitoring.
Following treatment, you will have some pain, which might get worse before it gets better. Take over-the-counter painkillers and gradually return to your activities. Try gentle walks and swimming before lifting or running. Discuss returning to sports with your doctor.
You may feel in pain for up to two weeks post-treatment. Return to work when you feel ready. If you have a physical job, you may need to switch to lighter duties until you feel better.
You can go home within a few hours post-treatment if you have no complications.
