Mr Paul Sutton

About

Mr Paul Sutton is a very experienced and well-known Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with a specialist practice in knee surgery. Mr Sutton was appointed as an NHS Consultant at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals Foundation Trust (STHFT) in 2001 and worked there until 2023. He is sub-specialty trained in knee surgery and spent 12 months working at the Adidas sports medicine centre in Auckland, NZ prior to taking up his NHS post. Whilst working in this renowned unit, Mr Sutton worked alongside several internationally respected knee surgeons including Barry Teitjens, a past president of the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee and Orthopaedic Surgery (ISAKOS). Mr Sutton is still an active member of this society.

Mr Sutton has a specialist practice that encompasses all aspects of knee surgery including arthroscopic (keyhole) knee surgery, knee ligament surgery, trauma knee surgery and surgery for the arthritic knee.

STHFT is one of the biggest NHS orthopaedic units in the UK and working in this unit for over 20 years allowed him to continue to develop his practice and expertise specifically in knee surgery. Over this period, he has become a nationally recognised knee surgeon, and a significant volume of his practice is ‘second opinion’ and tertiary referral work. STHFT is also a regional Major Trauma Centre and consequently he has extensive experience treating knee dislocations and complex multi-ligament knee injuries.

For almost 25 years Mr Sutton has also worked in private practice treating patients of all backgrounds as well as furthering his experience treating elite and professional athletes.

He carries out specialist surgery for patella instability including Trochleoplasty which is only performed in a small number of UK hospitals. Whilst at STHFT he developed the Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation (ACI) service which is now well established as one of a small number of Nationally Commissioned sites to offer this treatment.

Mr Sutton has close working relationships with several Professional Football clubs and manages knee injuries for Premier League footballers, lower league clubs as well as recreational footballers. He also has links with the Professional Footballer’s Association (PFA) treating ex-professional footballers. He describes himself as an ‘enthusiastic sportsman’ and thinks this helps his approach to managing patients with sports related injuries and sporting aspirations.

In addition to Mr Sutton’s clinical work, he is committed to surgical training, for many years he was a surgical trainer and with his colleagues ran a successful fellowship programme for senior Orthopaedic Trainees. He is a regular faculty member at regional and national knee meetings. He remains involved in research relevant to knee surgery and has published over 40 scientific papers and authored 6 book chapters.
