Cancer Screening: What You Need to Know
27/11/2024
A Prostate MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scan is an advanced diagnostic tool that provides detailed, high-resolution images of your prostate gland without using radiation. At LivingCare, we offer state-of-the-art prostate MRI scanning to create precise, three-dimensional pictures that help our specialists evaluate your prostate health with exceptional accuracy. These pictures provide clearer and more detailed results than traditional examination methods.
MRI scanning has revolutionised prostate diagnostics. With zero radiation exposure, it's entirely safe for repeated screenings. This sophisticated imaging can distinguish between benign conditions and potentially serious abnormalities, often avoiding an immediate biopsy. When biopsies are necessary, MRI guidance ensures pinpoint accuracy, while its early detection capabilities might open up a wider range of treatment options.
We offer two types of prostate MRI scans to suit different diagnostic needs. Our Bi-parametric MRI (bp-MRI) is a shorter, non-contrast scan ideal for initial prostate screening, monitoring known benign conditions, follow-up examinations, and patients who cannot receive contrast dye.
For more complex needs, our Multi-parametric MRI (mp-MRI) includes contrast enhancement, perfect for detailed investigation of suspected abnormalities, active surveillance of existing conditions, pre-surgical planning, and complex case assessment.
Our expert team will guide you through a simple preparation process. This includes completing a safety questionnaire about metal implants or devices, changing into a comfortable gown, removing any metal objects, and receiving clear instructions about the procedure.
You'll relax comfortably on the scanning table in our modern MRI suite during your examination. Our experienced radiographers communicate regularly with you through an intercom throughout the typical 30-40-minute procedure. The scan is entirely painless and causes no discomfort. Our specialist team gently administers contrast dye through a small cannula in your arm for multi-parametric MRI patients.
Following your scan, you can return immediately to your normal activities with no recovery period needed. Our specialist radiologists will review your results and provide a comprehensive report to your referring clinician.
An MRI scan is one of the safest medical imaging procedures available. Unlike X-rays or CT scans, it doesn't use radiation. The primary consideration is the possibility of false-positive or false-negative results, which is why our highly experienced radiologists carefully analyse all scans. Multi-parametric MRIs have a very small risk of allergic reaction to the contrast dye, though this is extremely rare. Some patients may experience mild claustrophobia during the scan, but our modern, spacious scanner and experienced team help minimise this discomfort.
Recovery from a prostate MRI scan requires no special considerations as it's completely non-invasive. You can immediately return to normal activities, including eating, drinking, and exercising. If you received contrast dye during your scan, we recommend drinking plenty of water to help flush it from your system. Our specialist radiologists will analyse your results, and we'll contact you to arrange a follow-up discussion of your results and any recommended next steps.

Yes, you can drive home after your prostate MRI scan. The procedure is non-invasive and doesn't involve any sedation or medication that would affect your driving ability. You can continue your normal daily activities immediately after the examination, including driving. If you have contrast dye or feel anxious, consider arranging alternative transport.
A prostate MRI scan is completely painless, and you won't feel the magnetic fields or radio waves. You'll simply lie still for 30-40 minutes on a comfortable scanning table. If you're having contrast dye, you'll only notice a brief cool sensation in your arm – nothing more.
You can eat and drink normally before the scan and take your regular medications. Wear comfortable clothing without metal fasteners, or we'll provide a gown. Remove all metal items, including jewellery. If you have any medical implants, inform us when booking. For contrast MRI, we'll provide specific instructions about fasting if needed.
