OCT Eye Scanning

OCT provides detailed 3D images of your retina using safe light waves, helping detect eye conditions early for more effective treatment.

OCT Eye Scanning

Overview

What is OCT?

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is an advanced, non-invasive imaging technology that produces detailed cross-sectional pictures of your eye. This sophisticated scan works like an ultrasound but uses light waves instead of sound to capture precise images of your retina – the light-sensitive layer at the back of your eye. OCT is particularly valuable for early detection and monitoring of eye conditions such as glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic eye disease.

The scan is recommended for people over 25 years old as part of their routine eye examination, those with a family history of eye diseases, and patients experiencing vision changes or eye symptoms. Its key benefit is detecting eye conditions before they cause noticeable vision changes, allowing for earlier intervention and better outcomes.

How OCT Works

OCT uses low-powered light waves to create detailed images of the distinct layers of your retina. During the scan, a special camera takes multiple cross-sectional pictures of your eye's internal structures. These images are combined to create a comprehensive 3D view that allows your eye care professional to examine each layer of your retina in remarkable detail – similar to taking a biopsy of the eye without any invasive procedures.

The technology can measure the thickness of your retinal layers and optic nerve with microscopic precision, helping to identify any abnormalities that might indicate early signs of eye disease.

What to Expect When Receiving OCT

Before:

  • No special preparation is required
  • You may be asked to remove contact lenses
  • Your specialist will explain the procedure and answer any questions

During:

  • The scan typically takes 5-10 minutes
  • You'll rest your chin on a support and remain still
  • The scanner will take multiple images without touching your eye
  • You may see a bright light, but the procedure is painless

After:

  • You can immediately return to normal activities
  • Your optometrist will discuss the results during your appointment
  • A detailed report will be kept for future comparison

Risks and Complications of OCT

OCT is considered extremely safe, with no known risks or side effects. It is:

  • Non-invasive – no physical contact with your eye
  • Radiation-free – uses light waves rather than X-rays
  • Quick and painless
  • Suitable for most patients, including children and elderly people

The only limitation is that some patients with severe cataracts or very unsteady eyes may not be able to obtain optimal scan quality.

How to Recover Following OCT

No recovery period is needed after an OCT scan. You can:

  • Drive immediately after the procedure
  • Return to work or daily activities straight away
  • Continue wearing contact lenses if you removed them for the scan
  • Schedule follow-up scans as recommended by your eye care professional

Regular monitoring with OCT helps track changes in your eye health over time, allowing for early intervention if needed.
