Spirometry is a test to diagnose and monitor lung conditions such as asthma, COPD, cystic fibrosis, and pulmonary fibrosis. It can also monitor your lung strength, which is crucial in certain sports.
Spirometry is a test to diagnose and monitor lung conditions such as asthma, COPD, cystic fibrosis, and pulmonary fibrosis. It can also monitor your lung strength, which is crucial in certain sports.
In a spirometry, you’ll force a breath into a spirometer device. The results determine whether there is a lung condition and monitor the progress from breathing exercises.
Before your appointment
Before your spirometry appointment, you should avoid smoking for 24 hours and avoid drinking alcohol, intense exercise, and eating large meals a few hours before.
During the appointment
You will be seated during the test. The tester will place a soft clip on your nose to prevent air from escaping.
After a few practice rounds, you’ll need to fill your lungs with air, close your lips around the mouthpiece and exhale quickly, fully emptying the lungs. You’ll be asked to do this three times.
The appointment will last 30 to 90 minutes.
The test is considered very safe. However, some people feel sick, dizzy, or tired after the test. However, if you have unstable angina, uncontrolled high blood pressure, or had a recent heart attack or operation on your head, chest, stomach, or eyes, you may need to avoid or delay the test.
You will be able to go home after the test.
You will receive your readings at the test. However, you may have a follow-up appointment to discuss the results.
You can drive after your appointment.
