Cancer Screening: What You Need to Know

Diagnose and monitor conditions inside the oesophagus, stomach, and first part of the small intestine (duodenum).
Gastroscopy is a treatment that examines the inside of your throat, oesophagus, or stomach to help find the cause of your symptoms. You may also have a Gastroscopy to remove tissue for a biopsy, remove growths, or treat stomach ulcers.
A consultant performs a Gastroscopy using a narrow and flexible telescopic camera called a gastroscope. The gastroscope is passed down the oesophagus into the stomach and the duodenum. The consultant will see a visual of the inside of your body on a nearby monitor.
You must stop eating at least six hours before the day of your gastroscopy. If you’re having sedation, you must arrange transport home after your appointment, as you cannot drive. Prepare details for any medications you take, as the consultant will ask.
You can have a sedation to make you feel relaxed and sleepy; another medication will numb your throat.
When you’re ready, the consultant will pass a thin, flexible tube with a small camera inside your mouth and down your throat. At this point, you may feel like you want to be sick; this should stop once the tube reaches your stomach. The consultant will pump air into your stomach to give them space to see the area. This can make you feel bloated and gassy.
The appointment should take 15 to 45 minutes.
Risks and complications of a Gastroscopy are rare. However, it’s important to be aware of them. Risks include:
After your Gastroscopy appointment, you can go home. If you have received a sedation, you need someone to drive you home and ideally stay with you for 24 hours.
You won’t be able to drink or eat until you can swallow, which usually takes 45 minutes. Unless the doctor tells you not to, you should be able to eat and drink normally after the procedure.
If you have had sedation, you’ll wait in the recovery area while the nurse checks your blood pressure.
You should be in the hospital for around four hours from start to finish. Provided you feel well, you will not need to stay overnight.
If you have a sedation, you cannot drive for 24 hours after the Gastroscopy. You should also not operate heavy machinery.
If you had a sedation, you may need to take the next day off work.
